Suffolk single-seater racer Josh Webster didn’t put a foot wrong during the opening rounds of the 2010 Michelin Formula Renault Winter Cup at the weekend by securing both race victories in the BARC Class on his local circuit Snetterton.

The 16-year-old Fortec Motorsport driver not only clinched both class wins in the one-make series but also picked up both NGK Spark Plugs Fastest Lap awards together with a new lap record for the 1.952-mile Norfolk track.

Hillspeed’s David Wagner (Glasgow) also impressed during the action-packed weekend by taking two second places to be just six points behind the Stowmarket racer in the BARC Class drivers’ standings. Team-mate Howard Fuller (Kingston upon Thames) enjoyed his share of the honours too with third in round one while Russian Roman Beregech, driving for Fortec Motorsport, picked up the remaining podium spot on the opening weekend.

Webster makes it two from two…

Despite a solid performance during the day’s earlier qualifying session, it was SWB Motorsport’s Mackenzie Taylor (Ashford) not Webster who finished as the highest placed BARC driver. Webster was therefore forced to settle for P2 for both races with Fuller starting in third and Beregech in fourth.

When round one got underway, Webster got the better traction off the line to lead Taylor into the first corner with the more experienced Josh managing to keep him behind throughout the entire race despite a Safety Car period mid-way through.

Taylor meanwhile had dropped down the order to fourth just ahead of Croatian newcomer Evelin Frank, competing with CRS Racing, leaving Wagner, despite starting from the very back of the grid, to take second and Fuller to finish third.

For race two, it was once again Taylor who had the advantage off the line and this time the 17-year-old was able to hold onto his lead during the thrilling opening lap. Webster bided his time though and soon found a way past to take the lead with Wagner, Beregech and Fuller also slipping by Taylor before the chequered flag was deployed with Wagner once again making up an impressive four places.

Commenting on his weekend Webster said: “It’s been an absolutely fantastic weekend and to take a clean sweep like this is just amazing. In the first race I managed to get the jump on Taylor who was starting on the dirty side of the track. The second race I had to bide my time a little before getting past but I’m really pleased with how things have gone this weekend.”

The next rounds of the 2010 Michelin Formula Renault Winter Cup take place at Pembrey circuit on 13th/14th November where the remaining four rounds of the six-race mini-series will play out. The weekend is already expected to see an increased grid with Puerto Rican-born Felix Serralles, making his debut with Fortec Motorsport, the latest driver to join the already packed grid.
