GP3: Leclerc fastest again on day two in Spielberg

ART Grand Prix’s Charles Leclerc ends on top at the Red Bull Ring test
ART Grand Prix’s and Scuderia Ferrari Team Development driver Charles Leclerc clocked the best laptime again on day two of GP3 testing at the Red Bull Ring in Austria. His time of 1:19.437 was 0.012s quicker than Trident’s Antonio Fuoco which was set in the morning session. Campos Racing’s Steijn Schothorst posted the fastest time in the afternoon in a 1:20.671, a mere 0.037s ahead of Arden International’s Jack Aitken.
It was another glorious day in Spielberg for the second and final day of testing. The start of the session was frenetic with all of the drivers keen to undertake race simulations. Jenzer Motorsport’s Oscar Tunjo set the initial pace ahead of Fuoco, Jake Hughes (DAMS) and Aitken.
Fuoco topped the timesheet after forty-five minutes ahead of ART Grand Prix’s Alexander Albon and Trident’s Giuliano Alesi before Koiranen’s Matthew Parry bettered the Italian’s laptime by 0.027s. Seconds later Leclerc shot to P1 by 0.065s.
Ferrari Driver Academy’s Fuoco then improved to second, this time just 0.012s off the Monegasque’s fastest time. There were three red flags during the morning; two after Alesi stopped on track at Turns 2 and 3 and thirdly when Konstantin Tereshchenko also stopped at T2.
At the close of the morning session, Leclerc remained on top after already posting the quickest laptime on day one. Fuoco, Parry, Albon, Aitken, Nyck de Vries, Tunjo, Ralph Boschung, Santino Ferrucci and Sandy Stuvik completed the top ten.
Following the one hour break for lunch, Boschung led the pack until Schothorst snatched P1 by 0.037s over Aitken and Jake Dennis. There was a red flag at the midway point when Kevin Jörg stopped in the gravel at Turn 6.
The final part of the session was studios with only a few small changes amongst the front-runners when Ferrucci jumped up to third in the latter stages, as dark clouds menacingly hovered over the Red Bull Ring.
At the chequered flag, Schothorst remained at the helm in front of Aitken, Ferrucci, Dennis, Tereschenko, Boschung, Tunjo, Artur Janosz, Richard Gonda and Parry.
GP3 Series will next be in action for Round 2 of the 2016 season at this same track on July 01-02-03.
