Preview – 2016 Formula One Pirelli Spanish Grand Prix

5th Round of the FIA Formula One World Championship, 13th to 15th May 2016

The Spanish Grand Prix traditionally kicks off the Formula One European season. For the race weekend in Barcelona, Ferrari will deliver an engine upgrade for the Sauber F1 Team.

Regarding the first in-season test in Barcelona (17th /18th May), it has been decided to cancel the team’s participation. The reasons are that the Sauber F1 Team will not introduce car updates during the Spanish Grand Prix. Besides that, the team has no young/test driver in place yet.

Marcus Ericsson

“The Spanish Grand Prix always kicks off Formula One’s European season. We all know the track very well from winter testing. It will be interesting to see how the C35 behaves in warmer conditions compared to the colder ones during testing in February. I am looking forward to racing there and hope we can make another step in the right direction.”

Felipe Nasr

“The Spanish Grand Prix is one milestone in the Formula One calendar. In general we and the other teams have a lot of data from the track in Barcelona, as we ran most of our test kilometres there. For the race weekend it will be important to achieve a satisfying qualifying position, because overtaking is, in general, difficult on this circuit.”

Track facts:
The track in Barcelona is one of the most complete for defining the car, as it features a mix of all kinds of corners. The first two sectors are biased towards medium and high-speed corners, whereas the third sector is dominated by a technical sequence of lower speed corners, hence the set-up is always a compromise. Downforce, a well-balanced car, as well as traction, are main facts for a good lap time.
