ART Grand Prix’s Marvin Kirchhöfer fastest in qualifying
A very closely fought and exciting qualifying session saw German driver Marvin Kirchhöfer come out on top for French squad ART Grand Prix. His best laptime of 1:47.040 was 0.157s faster than Arden International’s Emil Bernstorff who had topped the session earlier on. Campos Racing’s Alex Palou was third quickest.
Foggy conditions greeted the Silverstone paddock first thing with the sun breaking through as the thirty minute session commenced. Kirchhöfer was the early pace setter before Koiranen GP’s Jimmy Eriksson clocked a laptime of 1:48.165 to take P1.
Series leader Luca Ghiotto wasted no time in rising to the head of the timesheet, first to dip into the 1m47’s, two tenths faster than his German rival. The Italian lit up sector two and three in purple to show his menacing speed.
But he had fierce competition and Emil Bernstorff was also lighting up the timing screens after posting the fastest time in sector one to lap almost one tenth faster than Ghiotto to snatch P1. Carlin’s Mitchell Gilbert put his head down and set a flier to record a time two tenths faster than the Brit, but this only lasted for a short time as the Arden International driver improved on his personal best by almost four tenths.
Kirchhöfer then shot back to the head of the timings, with Palou and Matthew Parry (Koiranen GP) close in pursuit. Series leader Luca Ghiotto was on a hot lap and looking to threaten for pole position but he ran wide and lost time. Bernstorff was also on a mission to reclaim pole, but despite his best attempts, he ended up one tenth shy of the ART Grand Prix ace.
Under pressure, Kirchhöfer delivered on his final lap to improve on his pole by another tenth to confirm P1 in qualifying and his third of his GP3 career. Bernstorff will join the German on the front row with Palou ending up third and looking for his first points of his GP3 season. Behind the trio: Parry starts his home in fourth: his best qualifying result of the campaign, Jimmy Eriksson, Ghiotto, Adderly Fong, Esteban Ocon, Gilbert and Kevin Ceccon complete the top ten.
Hot temperatures are expected later for the forty-minute long race at 16.20pm local time today to see who will come out on top with the 24 drivers on the Super Hard Pirelli compound tyre this weekend.
