Speaking to Autosport magazine, Newey commented: “Our choices were French F4 or BRDC F4. These were realistic budgets. If you look at MSA Formula and Italian F4 the budget is two or three times more. It was pretty easy [to decide] to be honest.”
In addition to offering significantly more affordable running costs than its UK-based rival series, BRDC F4 has other strong advantages. Its car is race-proven and its engine normally-aspirated, ensuring excellent reliability and parity of equipment; its young drivers are given more valuable opportunities to gain experience from test mileage; its drivers benefit from wide-reaching PR and social media support; and its role as a step on the young driver’s career ladder is established. Five of the 12 most recent finalists for the prestigious McLaren Autosport BRDC Awards have been BRDC F4 competitors.
Harri Newey made an impressive BRDC F4 debut last weekend (8-9 November) in the Winter Championship opener at Snetterton. Running with HHC Motorsport, the team he has committed to for the full 2015 season, Newey scored top-six finishes in all four races, with a best result of fourth. He also lined-up third for the start of race two, where the grid order was determined by fastest laps in the previous race. Newey sits fifth in the standings at the half-way point of the winter series.
