MG KX Momentum British Touring Car Championship stars Jason Plato and Sam Tordoff say that they have only one thing on their minds at Brands Hatch this weekend, and that is to sign off the 2013 season with a flourish.
The pair have shared out seven wins between them over the course of the 27 rounds held so far, and go into the showdown confident of more success. Plato has an outside shot at the title, while Tordoff wants to cement his place as the top rookie of the season.
Plato, who has won a record-breaking 80 times in his BTCC career, said that he wasn’t thinking about title success just purely aiming for a glorious weekend. He said: “If I go out there and win as many races as I can, then that is all that I can do – I simply love the winning feeling, and want to taste champagne again before the season is out.
“Our car should be suited to the Brands Hatch Grand Prix circuit, which is one of the best drivers’ circuits in the country. In the dry, we are confident of a quick car and that means that I can push for victories.
“I am realistic and I know now that the championship is a really long shot for us,” he added. “That doesn’t mean that I am going to roll over. Attacking is the only way to drive and the only thing that I can do is to go out there and win as much as I can. The rest of the guys battling for the crown will fight their own battles and hopefully they will be behind me.”
Tordoff is aiming to cap a sensational rookie season with another victory to add to the winners’ trophy he collected at Snetterton in August. He says he is also aware of Plato’s points position and has revealed that he will be out to help his team-mate in any way that he can.
The 24-year-old said: “I know that Jason has given himself half a chance in the chase for the title and I will do anything in my power to help him if I can,” said Tordoff. “For me, it is about hitting the ground running and having a quick car from the outset. The configuration of the Brands Hatch Grand Prix circuit is one that will suit the MG. That means we can start working on the set-up and getting ready for qualifying – which will be vital. I have had a great season and the ultimate way to cap it would be to win another round. I will be giving it my all.”
Ian Harrison, boss of the MG KX Momentum racing team, said that he expected both drivers to be at the front over the course of the three races on Sunday.
“We won two races last time out at Silverstone and we need to carry that momentum on going in to Brands Hatch,” he said. “The only thing we are interested in is earning some more trophies. It’s not easy to win in the BTCC so we need to be at the top of our game but we have shown this season that we have a capability to do it. Both Jason and Sam have a great shot of winning races at Brands, and we are determined to finish the season on a high.”
The three races at Brands Hatch will be broadcast live on ITV4. The programme will begin at 10.45hrs.
