More than 20 cars will line the start grid for the opening rounds of the 2011 Protyre Formula Renault BARC Championship after Josh Webster, Kieran Vernon and David Wagner became the latest driver signings for the series.
Seventeen-year-old Suffolk racer Webster, who finished fourth in the 2010 season, and 21-year-old Vernon from West Sussex will complete a four-car line-up for Fortec Motorsport, together with current drivers Archie Hamilton and Spaniard Victor Jimenez.
Scottish racer Wagner, who competed in the Winter Cup series last year, has signed for MGR Motorsport with the 18-year-old the third driver for Mark Godwin’s squad with the possibility of a fourth later in the season.
Meanwhile SWB Motorsport has confirmed 16-year-old Macaulay Walsh from Northampton will complete the team’s four-car attack after a successful test at Silverstone recently and will partner Jack Dex, Andrew Jarman and Raoul Owens.
Organisers are also expecting further entries for the one-make single-seater series with Championship winning team Hillspeed announcing their intentions of running a fourth car. The Derbyshire based squad has also confirmed they will be taking three cars to compete in the Formula Renault 2.0 NEC meeting at Zandvoort – a rare international opportunity gifted to drivers by Championship organisers.
Speaking on his return to the Protyre-backed series Webster, who won last year’s BARC Winter Cup, said: “It feels good to be back, especially with the series boasting such strong grids and some very competitive drivers. I’m pleased to be back at Fortec too and we potentially have four drivers vying for the title so it will really push us and lead to some great racing.”
Newcomer Vernon said: “It’s fantastic to be out in the series this year. Due to my late deal, I will only have one test before the first rounds which will also be my first time in the car so I’m not expecting too much from the opening rounds. Hopefully I can develop quickly though and cause a few surprises early on.”
Wagner from Glasgow commented: “After a good Winter Cup campaign I’m really pleased to be back in Formula Renault and with a team like MGR Motorsport who I know will give me a good car.”
Championship Promoter Simon North added: “At the start of the year, we set ourselves a target of 20 cars and we’re pleased to say we have already surpassed that with 21 confirmed entries and the possibility of more on the way.”
